QUESTION POSED ON: 24 August 2007
I need to set up an alternate recipient address for a user to forward copies of email to a BlackBerry mobile device. In Exchange Server 5.5, you can set up a custom recipient that can then be used as an alternate recipient. How can I do this in Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
The same configuration is possible in Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003.

If both users are in the same domain you can:

  • Go into Active Directory (AD) and right-click on User A and select Properties.
  • From there you can click on Exchange General Tab -> Delivery options.
  • Under Forwarding Address click on Forward To -> Modify.
  • From here enter User B's account and select Check Name. Hit Okay and Apply.
  • At this point, when any email goes to User A, a copy is being forwarded to User B.

If User A is in one domain and needs to forward to User B, who in the BlackBerry context has a BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) account (for example), here are the steps:

  • Go into AD and create a new account. Call it USER A II (or whatever you want).
  • Do not create a mailbox for this user at this point.
  • Once the user account is created, right-click on the user and select All Tasks -> Exchange Tasks.
  • Click Next and select "establish Email address."
  • Under External Email select Modify -> Custom Address.
  • Enter the email address of User B.
  • Click Next and Finish.

This will forward a copy of User A's email to User B.
