Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 is designed to watch Windows Performance Monitor counters, interpret the results, and display them in an easy-to-understand manner.

It is possible to use Performance Monitor on its own, without implementing Microsoft Operations Manager, but there is a fairly steep learning curve involved. There are thousands of counters in Performance Monitor, all with different threshold values and levels of importance.

Even with a good understanding of Performance Monitor and its various counters, the act of physically monitoring a server can be an issue. Few administrators have the time to manually monitor dozens of counters on a daily basis.

Microsoft Operations Manager makes it easier to manage Performance Monitor counters. In this tutorial, Exchange MVP Brien Posey provides step-by-step instructions on how to set up Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 to monitor an Exchange Server 2003 environment.
